PANEL 2
Making sense of the data maze: Anecdote vs evidence
Dr. Neha Chandarana (Chair)
Lecturer + Faculty Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion at the University of Bristol Having obtained my BSc and PhD in Manchester, I moved south to join the University of Bristol as Lecturer in October 2021. I teach and conduct research in composite materials, with projects focusing on damage detection and environmental sustainability. Throughout my career and life, I have been consciously aware of my gender, my culture, and the colour of my skin. This has driven me to play an active role in supporting individuals from marginalised and often underrepresented backgrounds, through my involvement in widening participation and outreach activities as a student, and now in my role as the Faculty of Engineering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Champion at Bristol. In this role I have led and contributed to internal projects looking at minimising exclusion within staff recruitment processes and reviewing our faculty EDI web pages. Through consultation with staff and students we developed a Faculty EDI Commitment Statement, which states our aims and intentions alongside definitions of equity, diversity, and inclusivity that capture the nuanced experiences of students and staff in Engineering. Currently I am leading Ca-pow! - a project funded through the Royal Academy of Engineering Diversity Impact Programme, which aims to understand the experience of undergraduate engineering students who have intersecting disadvantage markers through data capture, evaluation of widening participation initiatives, and the development of vertical peer networks. We have actively worked with the Royal Academy of Engineering to develop a Community of Practice with all of the other projects funded through this programme and are pleased to be hosting the first event in November 2023.

Devon Lowndes
Co-Founder and Director of Self Agency Equality isn’t treating everyone the same. After all, we all have unique brains and ambitions. Neurodiversity is everybody. It’s a case of building an environment where we support everyone’s needs and goals. As someone with ADHD and dyslexia, I know what it’s like to feel different. In the past, it hasn’t always been easy for me to fulfil my potential in work and educational settings, which has had a profound negative effect on my self-esteem and wellbeing. Self Agency is here to shine a light on neurodiversity and finally give everyone the tools to understand the challenges and enable organisations to evolve their cultures. People with dyslexia, dyscalculic, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, OCD, Tourette syndrome, mental health illnesses and acquired neurodiversity (such as trauma) have a wealth of strengths to bring to our society. It’s time that they were recognised and valued. I’m so excited to share my journey, experience and knowledge with you. Here’s to building a brighter future for the neurodivergent.
